Paros bits and bites!

Here are some things you should definitely try during your visit to Paros.

Fresh from the sea

Paros boasts the largest Cycladic fishing fleet and fresh seafood arrives daily at the local taverns and restaurants of the island. Due to this fact, fish is cooked in many ways, such as the tasty kakavia soup. You will have a wide variety of seafood to choose from; gouna, salatouri, scorpionfish, urchin, lobster, cuttlefish, are only a few of them, a taste challenge that you must not miss. Bon appetit!

Eat like a local

The most beloved dish of the Parians is mushrooms either grilled or fried drizzled with lemon. The Paros cuisine also uses a lot of legumes and fruits creating spectacular specialties such as zucchini and tomato balls, boiled greens, skordalia (garlic sauce), and dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves). And if you are brave enough, try karavoles (giant snails) eaten stewed or with garlic considered to be a gourmet delicacy.

Say cheese!

Paros has many small family dairies with cows and sheep that produce local cheese and fresh butter. Some of the known Parian cheeses are gruyere, kefalotyri, mizithra, and the tasty cream cheese. If you visit Parikia you will find some rare ones like touloumisio or the hard sour cheese.

What about dessert?

The Parians use fruits such as apricots, quinces, and figs to make marmalades and sweet preserves – perfect for yogurt topping – while the figs are also used to make baked goods like cakes and cookies. Plus, many desserts are made out of local cheese like kalitsounia, tartlets, and cheese pies with honey.

Pop and pour

Paros has one of the oldest vineyards and the savory wines are always present on the table accompanying a fine meal and setting a joyful atmosphere. The combination of well-hydrated vines with sandy, well-draining soils creates a sweet floral flavor in the grapes. The most popular ones are red Mandilaria and white Monemvassia with a discreet sweet aroma. Distinctive and palatable, the wines of Paros are not to be missed.
