Top 5 traditional Santorini products

If you’ve already packed your bags for Santorini, here’s a quick recap of what’s really worth tasting in traditional dishes and more. If you haven’t booked your holiday yet, here’s what you’re missing:

Cherry Tomato: the most famous and unique product of Santorini. The cherry tomato is small in size, red of color and full of flavor. The Santorini tomato seed came from Egypt but it acquired unique characteristics and flavor in the volcanic soil of Santorini. Enjoy it fresh, sun- dried, as a paste and even in a traditional tiny portioned syrupy sweet called “sweet of the spoon”.

Fava: the fava bean variety that is found in Santorini is the oldest traditional product of the island. It is cultivated for more than 3,500 years, has a distinctive smooth and earthy flavor and it’s one of the healthiest comfort foods you could ever wish to try.

White eggplant: Santorini eggplants are white, have a sweeter taste than the average eggplant and do not absorb as much oil when fried. Try them in Santorini’s moussaka where they replace the classic eggplant and give it a milder, yummier flavor.

Katsouni: this lesser known delicacy is simply the name Santorinians have given to the humble cucumber. The Santorini variety is smaller in size than the classic cucumbers and you can enjoy it fresh throughout summer.

Capers: What to better accompany the flavor of the cherry tomato? Used in Santorinian salads and other local dishes, they have a unique flavor which lifts ordinary ingredients to other gastronomical heights. Buy a jar of pickled Santorini capers to try achieving the same results at home. –You will fail, but still worth it for a salty treat.

You can taste all five and more if you book your holiday now at a Santorini luxury villa!
