Greek Meze – The Habit of Sharing Plates

Greek Meze is in reality many dishes on the table for all to share. People gather around and drink wine, ouzo, or tsipouro complemented by delicious local delicacies. Entire restaurants are dedicated to the culture of meze, called ‘mezedopolia’, and some of the most famous ones are in Volos in central Greece.

Meze dishes range from something as simple as handpicked local olives with warm pitta, to more elaborate dishes.  Here are some of our team’s favourite ones, be sure to try them when you come to Greece on your luxury BlueVillas vacation.

Dimitris (Villa Consultant) – Domatokeftedes

‘Keftedes means fritters in Greek, and the most popular ones are with zucchini, eggplant, or tomatoes, and dipped into a tzatziki yogurt dip.  Nowhere do you find these so good as on Santorini, there grow the famous tomatoes in the volcanic soil, and you haven’t lived until you try these tomato fritters at sundown as the colors of the sky light up the volcano. Delicious and mesmerizing!

Amanda (Concierge) - Kalamarakia

Paros has the most delicious crunchy fried kalamari, the local fishermen bring the squid to the restaurants in the summer and this dish is rings and tentacles seasoned, coated in flour, and fried until crispy golden brown. At night in the marinas of the island, the smell of crispy squid and fresh fish evokes memories of happy summer days.

Dina (Content) - Saganaki

This is my absolute favorite dish, my grandmother is from the Peloponnese and is a total saganaki-pro. In our family, we love Shrimp Saganaki. The dish is cooked in a a small 2-handled pan called a saganaki, and whenever we have people over someone will make a shrimp saganaki, the warm spicy smell, and my family all around, this is what contentment is.
