Culinary Delights: A Guide to Naxian Local Cuisine
Naxos’s traditional cuisine reflects its local production and unique flavors, mixing dairy products, fresh vegetables, seafood, and meat, the perfect paradise for all foodie lovers!
Naxian potatoes
The potatoes are the protagonists of Naxian cuisine and are served alongside each dish or can even be enjoyed on their own. What makes them so unique is the creamy and moist texture that keeps them firm even after cooking. Roasted to perfection and flavored with butter, lemon, and oregano are truly a chef’s kiss. Trust us, you haven’t tasted anything like that before!
Gruyere cheese (Graviera)
The island has a massive cheese production, the largest one in Greece actually, as 14% of the country’s dairy production comes from Naxos. What distinguishes it from the other variants of Greek graviera cheese is the fact that it’s made from cow’s milk rather than the usual sheep’s milk. That way it has a more sweet and rich butter-like flavor, making it one of the most popular dairy Greek products.
Kitron (citron)
Kitron liqueur is derived from the fruits and leaves of the citrus tree and is also one of the main ingredients of the island’s cuisine. Ranging from liquids like aperitifs and cocktails to sweet variations like desserts and key ingredient to local dishes, Kitron showcases Naxian’s rich gastronomic history.
Naxian sausages (Louzes)
Naxian sausages, locally known as "Louzes," are made from pork and a mixture of aromatic herbs and spices. Skillfully seasoned and prepared with care, sausages are probably the favorite dish among locals, usually served as a side dish alongside wine or other Greek alcoholic drinks such as ‘ouzo’ and ‘tsipouro’.
