The concept: Behind the scenes

A day at Villa Melanthea starts quietly. Someone crosses the garden to put coffee on in one kitchen, someone else walks down to the village bakery in Sissi, and slowly the three villas wake up. With thirteen bedrooms and space for up to twenty-six guests, plus two more if needed, this estate works best for guests who are drawn to the slower side of Crete but still value understated luxury. The setting is distinctly Cretan, with a mix of mountain views, expansive terraces and the hint of sea air.

Outdoors

By late morning, most of the group has made its way outside. Children move between the three heated saltwater pools, choosing whichever feels most fun that day, while others claim loungers or shaded chairs with a book. The heated jacuzzi comes into play when the air cools slightly, and by evening the fire pit and BBQ see the most use, with one villa prepping salads, another grilling and everyone drifting towards the longest table. The lawn keeps bare feet happy, and there always seems to be one quiet corner, even when the estate is full.

Indoors

At any given time, each villa has its own small story going on inside. A game in one living room, a film in another, a few people cooking in one kitchen while someone sets the table next door. The interiors are modern and uncomplicated, with fireplaces, TVs and PlayStations for slower hours. Bedrooms are contemporary and comfortable, with king, double or twin beds, including some reduced-mobility suites. A gym with sauna and a laundry room keep both energy and practicalities on track.

Good to know

Sissi is a calmer alternative to some of Crete’s better-known spots, with a small harbour and family-run tavernas where evenings tend to stretch without much effort. Kalimera beach is close by for easy sea days, and Agios Nikolaos is near enough for a change of pace and extra dining options. Heraklion airport and port on the north coast are the most convenient arrival points. Back at Melanthea, there is private parking and an electric car charging station available at extra charge, so coming and going stays simple.
