No matter which Cycladic island you visit this summer, be prepared to be captivated by its unique aesthetics.

The Cyclades, the ambassador of Greek architecture with astonishing design and picturesque, idyllic narrow streets. Each Cycladic island is unique; the cube-shaped churches of Santorini, the windmills of Mykonos, the whitewashed town of Paros, the list could go on forever.

So, what are the main elements of Cycladic architecture?

Signature colors

The most prominent characteristic of the Cyclades is the existence of only 2 colors; white and blue. Blue domes and balconies are the perfect addition to the overall white canvas of the buildings, blending beautifully with the blue Aegean Sea. Apart from the obvious fact that these are the signature colors of the Greek flag, the reason behind this homogeneity is a governmental decree in 1936, ordering all the Cycladic houses to be painted with these colors to represent the white foam of the sea and the sky. As the churches were always an inextricable part of Greek heritage, they were also painted in white and blue. If you are looking for a traditional Cycladic summer house, Dryos I is an elegant luxury retreat for 15 guests in Paros.

Minimal and practical

Cycladic architecture manages to combine aesthetics and practicality into one! Most of the houses are simply designed, 1-level buildings, and with balconies for outdoor living.  Their minimal structure is due to the fact that people were looking for a way to protect themselves from the strong winter winds and the high temperature in summer. Plus, the color white reflects the sun and keeps the temperature at a desired level throughout the entire year. In Santorini, many houses were built into the caldera rock face, like caves, to keep a stable temperature, and most of them have been renovated to retain the original design. A fine example of a cave house is Elite Grand villa, a luxury property on the Oia cliffside.

Hilltop location

If you have already been to the Cyclades, you may have noticed that most of the houses are built facing south-east and quite far away from the shore, usually on top of the hill or on steep cliffs. That was not unintentionally done but was the inhabitant’s defense against pirates, who used to attack and plunder the islands.  Nowadays, you can enjoy amazing views of the sea and the surrounding islands, without worrying about seeing a pirate ship on the horizon! The view from the terrace of Villa Azure is incomparable and gives you a sense of authentic Cycladic living.
