Generally, the best time to visit Greece, weather-wise, is from mid-April to mid-June and from September to mid-October. Late spring, early summer and early autumn offer mild weather, reasonable prices and fewer tourists, while popular destinations such as Mykonos and Santorini are not yet super-crowded. The days are still long, warm and sunny yet not too hot, so the time is great to enjoy the pristine beaches and swim in the sea, watch unforgettable sunsets or take long, leisurely walks in the city. While it can be still a bit chilly, during springtime and by June, the sea in areas such as the Cyclades, the Ionian Islands and Crete is warm enough for swimming. Especially in Crete, the southernmost Greek island, you can go swimming well into October. Note that the Easter time in Greece is very special and unique as well, so if you have the opportunity to see the festivities first-hand, don’t miss out even though it’s very busy.
The period from mid-June to September is the busiest of all. Peak season between July and August brings in all about unruly crowds and too much heat. However, summer in Greece is spectacular and famous destinations like Santorini and Mykonos are visited by thousands of tourists, VIPs among them, who scatter the beaches in the day and then party all night long. Crowded as these places may be, every moment there is precious and Instagram-worthy! Also, Athens is crowded with tourists in July and August as well, but as the weather is beach-perfect, Athenians tend to leave the city so if you like big cities to yourself, August is the ideal time to be there.
