The story tells of two childhood friends, Jacques, and Enzo, who are rival world-renowned free divers. The movies has become a cult classic, not least for the shooting locations and an ode to the most spectacular oceans on the planet. The Two Faces of January directed by Hossein Amini , is based on a 1964 novel by Patricia Highsmith. It is a watchable throwback to the Hitchcockian thrillers of the 60s. A dashing con man Chester and his beautiful wife Colette take a tour of Greece, and when visiting the Acropolis they meet Rydal, who is working as a tour guide and tourist scammer. The ensuing story is a twisting plot of murder and double-crossing. It was filmed on location in Crete, Athens and Istanbul and there are some great scenic shots of the wildlands of Crete.

The Sisterhood of The Travelling Pants. Arguably nothing says ‘Greek islands’ more than the images of Oia village in the north of Santorini. This teen movie (1998) based on the novels by Ann Brashares, tells the story of four best friends who are having their first summer apart since childhood. One of them spends the summer in Santorini with her grandparents and there are great shots of Oia village and the famous Ammoudi Bay, with the wonderful rock formations and sparkling waters. Santorini remains one of the top destinations in the world and you only have to look at our Santorini caldera villas to see why.

To Nhsi/The Island . This is not a movie; but we had to include this mini-series made for Greek TV. It is based on the popular English novel The Island by Victoria Hislop. Most of the scenes are shot on the island of Crete, at Plaka, Spinalonga, Elounda, and Agios Nikolaos. The story is set in the 40s and 50s and tells the story of Alexis Fielding who goes in search of her mother’s roots in Plaka a small village on Crete facing the Leper Colony on the island of Spinalonga. This is a visually stunning poignant story in 26 episodes from the Crete of our grandparents. Heart-warming and visually stunning. Definitely worth binge-watching!
